When to Visit a Pulmonologist

Most people see a pulmonologist after getting a referral from their primary care physician. Pulmonologists specialize in respiratory disorders, making them a resource for conditions that affect breathing and the lungs.

The body prompts a cough whenever it needs to dislodge dirt and debris from the body’s air passages. Small bouts of coughing are not usually anything to be concerned with, but frequent coughing accompanied by pain or a hoarse voice should be examined by a doctor. The most common causes of persistent coughing include asthma, allergies, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

What is COPD?

COPD is a chronic lung condition that obstructs airflow. Both bronchitis and emphysema are considered forms of COPD.

Symptoms of COPD include:

  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty exercising
  • Tight feelings in the chest
  • Swelling the feet or legs
  • Lethargy
  • Frequent coughing accompanied by mucus
  • Congestion in the morning

Patients with COPD often experience long bouts of discomfort various times throughout the year. Without treatment, the condition of the lungs will grow worse resulting in more severe symptoms. Thankfully, COPD is treatable. With appropriate management, patients can keep their symptoms under control and continue living a pain-free, independent life.
