The weight management program is being offered by Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center. Other topics covered during the program include detailed information on portion sizes, how to read food labels, physical fitness, why it is important to maintain a healthy weight, fad diets, how to avoid emotional eating, smart grocery shopping and much more. Community Health Screening

Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center is sponsoring a Community Health Screening on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 from 5:30 – 9:30 a.m. in the Community Relations Classroom at Memorial Southside Office, 1100 West 12th Avenue in Jasper. Participants must be 18 years of age or older and will have the following items checked: height and weight, blood pressure, cholesterol (including total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides), blood glucose, and chemistry blood work. A 12-hour fast is required for assessments requiring blood work; however you may drink water and take prescribed medications. Read more

Memorial Hospital Announces Tobacco-Free Campus Policy

Effective Thursday, November 17, 2005, the new policy prohibits the use of all tobacco products including cigarettes, pipes, cigars, chewing tobacco, and snuff in buildings and company vehicles and on all property owned and leased by the hospital. Read more

“Better Breathing” Open House

Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center is hosting a “Better Breathing Open House: Improving Your Life While Living With Obstructive Sleep Apnea” on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 from 3:30 – 7:00 p.m. Sleep Apnea is a chronic condition in which a person has one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths during sleep. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, which often means the airway has collapsed or is blocked. Read more

“Comfort Blankets” for Pediatric Patients

Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center provides medical care for more than 320 patients ranging in age from newborn to 18 in the Pediatric Unit each year. The goal is to provide each hospitalized child with a “Comfort Blanket,” a new blanket or afghan to help relieve some of the stress and anxiety that children normally experience when hospitalized. The child gets to keep the blanket and take it home when discharged from the hospital. Read more

“Creating Hope” For Cancer Patients

Creating Hope® is an Indiana-based, non-profit organization that uses creative expression as a coping mechanism for patients with cancer. When Jeanette Shamblen, founder of Creating Hope®, was diagnosed with cancer she found that she felt much better on days when she painted. She had no previous art experience before her diagnosis. Her parents, John and Tina Gianfagna, now coordinate art expression activities as part of the CompleteLife program at IU Simon Cancer Center. In January, Mr. and Mrs. Gianfagna spoke at Memorial Hospital’s "Celebrate Today” program and soon after, Creating Hope® sessions began at the Lange-Fuhs Cancer Center. Read more

Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center recently renamed its Heart & Vascular Center in honor of Dr. Phil Dawkins, who passed away unexpectedly in November 2008. The Center on Level 6 of the hospital’s LCM Tower will now be known as the “Phillip R. Dawkins Heart & Vascular Center.” The Center’s lobby will have signage indicating the new name as well as a bust of Dr. Dawkins created by his son, Zach, an artist in Bloomington. Read more

Memorial Hospital Establishes Parkinson’s Disease Support Group

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. Symptoms include tremors or trembling in the hands, arms, legs, jaw or head; rigidity or stiffness of the limbs and trunk; slowness of movement; and postural instability or impaired balance. The disease is both chronic, meaning it persists over a long period of time, and progressive, meaning its symptoms grow worse over time. It is estimated that 50,000 Americans are diagnosed each year with this disease that has no cure. Read more

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and southwestern Indiana’s statistics are certainly no better. According to the Indiana State Department of Health, nearly 38% of all deaths in Dubois County in 2005 were attributed to major cardiovascular disease. Stroke Screening

Stroke is the third-leading cause of death among Americans and the leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability. If you have risk factors for stroke, a stroke screening is recommended. Major risk factors include high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, smoking, peripheral arterial disease, atrial fibrillation, a family history of stroke, TIAs (transient ischemic attacks) or carotid artery disease, or being over the age of 55. The stroke screening is NOT recommended for those who have been previously diagnosed with carotid artery disease or have experienced symptoms of TIA or stroke. These individuals need a complete carotid duplex study. Read more

According to the National Stroke Association, approximately 780,000 Americans will experience a stroke this year. Strokes are the third-leading cause of death among Americans and the number one cause of adult disability. Almost 85 percent of strokes (or brain attacks) result when arteries are blocked by blood clots or by the gradual buildup of plaque and other fatty deposits. Frequently, the origin is plaque build-up in the carotid arteries of the neck. Read more

Women & Infants Services Receives ISDA Gold Award

Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center’s Women and Infants Services department was presented with the Gold Award from the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) for its best practices in the prevention of perinatal hepatitis B infection. The Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that a birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine be given to all infants born in the United States. According to the review conducted by ISDH, 83% of the 976 infants born at Memorial Hospital in 2008 received the hepatitis B vaccination. Read more
